UNIVERSITY OF KWA-ZULU NATALThe University of KwaZulu-Natal is the result of the merger between the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Natal.
The two KwaZulu-Natal universities were among the first batch of South African institutions to merge in 2004 in accordance with the government's higher educational restructuring plans that will eventually see the number of higher educational institutions in South Africa reduced from 36 to 21.
The University of KwaZulu-Natal is a multi-campus, residential, teaching and research-led university located in the picturesque province of KwaZulu-Natal. The University is structured on a College model – each comprising academic Schools within which Disciplines offer a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across five campuses – Westville, Edgewood, Howard College, Medical School and Pietermaritzburg. Research activities span the natural, biomedical, humanities and social sciences. The University's scientists play an integral role in the global fight against HIV /AIDS and Tuberculosis. The Centre for AIDS Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), one of the largest HIV and AIDS research centres, is located at the University's Medical School campus. Other major research centres in HIV and AIDS research include the Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies and the multi-million rand KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for HIV and Tuberculosis (K-RITH)

WebsiteSCHOOL OF DEVELOPMENT STUDIESAs part of a larger re-organization of academic schools in 2012, the former School of Development Studies has been incorporated into the School of Built Environment and Development Studies together with the schools of Community Development, Architecture Planning and Housing. The Centre for Civil Society will continue to be part of the new school.
Specialising in critical, interdisciplinary analysis of development theory, policy and practice, we offer several post-graduate degrees - by coursework and research - with the rigour, flexibility and currency matching any comparable programme. The School offers course-work or dissertation Masters degrees in Development Studies and Population Studies. In addition, the School has a thesis-based PhD programme. With expertise in political economy, political ecology, population studies, social policy and civil society, Population Studies and Development Studies staff are positioned to critically engage in debates and strategy over development theory and practice, as well to provide critique and alternatives to current orthodoxies.

WebsiteSTUDY PROGRAMMESMA ProgrammesThe coursework Masters Degrees are offered over one or two years and include a dissertation component. A Research Masters is also offered depending on availability of supervision.
Master in Development StudiesThe aim of the programme is to produce students who are able to analyse, formulate and evaluate alternative development policies as well as to be knowledgeable about alternative development theories. The focus is on providing applied skills as well as analytical tools for evaluating comparative development experiences.

Masters in Population Studies
The Population Studies Programme is an academic and vocational programme designed to equip students with key concepts and applied skills for them to understand and participate in the processes of and structures of demographic analysis, policy formulation and implementation. The goal of the graduate training programme is to produce social scientists, fully trained in their discipline, with broad knowledge of population studies and specialized skills in statistical and demographic techniques, who can undertake independent research on a wide range of population topics. The multiplicity of socio-economic problems confronting society requires new and innovative approaches to development policy formulation and implementation.
