UNIVERSITY OF DUISBURG-ESSEN (Germany)
Creative inspiration between the Rhine and Ruhr: the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), a Two-Campus University, is located in the European region with the highest density of institutions of higher learning. Created in 2003 by the merger of the universities of Duisburg and Essen, the UDE is the youngest university in North Rhine-Westphalia and one of the ten largest universities in Germany. Both campuses are easy to reach and offer some 39.086 students (among them about 5000 international students) a broad academic spectrum with an international orientation - ranging from the humanities and social sciences to economics and the engineering and natural sciences, including medicine. Students from 130 countries are currently enrolled at the UDE. In many disciplines the UDE ranks amongst the TOP 10 of German research universities. Over the past three years, research income has risen by 150 percent, a development which is also thanks to the five main research areas: Nanosciences, Biomedical Sciences, Urban Systems, Empirical Research in Education, and Change of Contemporary Societies.

THE INSTITUTE OF POLITICAL SCIENCE
Study and research opportunities for EUSA_ID applicants are offered by the Institute of Political Science at the University Duisburg-Essen (UDE). It is the largest educational and research institution for political science in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and enjoys high standing within the German political science community. Students benefit from a wide range of associated research centres and programmes, such as the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF) and the NRW School of Governance.
The Institutes offers a broad selection of study programmes: a BA in Political Science, several specialized Masters in German and English language, as well as the opportunity to acquire a doctoral degree (Ph.D. equivalent). The BA Political Science programme provides a general introduction to the discipline and qualifies for any MA programme in social sciences. Close cooperation with the Institute of Sociology and the Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST) opens opportunities for interdisciplinary orientation.
MA programmes correspond to the Institute's research focus – including an MA in International Relations and Development Policy, an MA in Policy Management, Public Policy and Public Administration as well as an MA in Theory and Comparative Studies of Political Systems in Transition. These programmes stretch over two years of study. Regular course language is German. The Institute offers in addition an English-language MA programme Development and Governance with one-year duration – building on elements of the other MA programmes.
Research at the Institute of Political Science is spear-headed by five associated research institutes:

Institute for Development and Peace (INEF);
• Institute for East Asian Studies (IN-EAST);
• Institute for Work, Skills and Training (IAQ);
• NRW School of Governance;
• Rhine-Ruhr Institute for Social Research and Political Counseling (RISP e.V.).

STUDY PROGRAMMES
MA Programmes
Master in Development and Governance

The Master's programme in Development and Governance combines teaching in several political science sub-disciplines (development studies, international relations, peace and conflict studies, administration and policy studies, comparative politics of European Union, Sub-Saharan Africa or East Asia). The main emphasis is on acquiring knowledge of the relevance of different tiers and forms of governance-processes (local, national, international) both within the established democracies and the developing societies, and on training students' analytical skills. The programme is thus providing students with both policy- and region-specific expertise. To gain first hand practical skills, an internship with a German (development) organisation is scheduled after the first semester.

Alumni testimonal by MA Rakchanok Chatjuthamard, Thailand  duisburg-essen
Coming from a practitioner's perspective, through the Master's programme, I was introduced to the sound academic approaches to analyse problems in development and governance both at the global and at the more in-depth regional levels. The friendly exchange with other international and German students have widened my worldview on global governance issues. Furthermore, extracurricular activities help me familiarise myself with German academic standard and gain insights in German development work and policy.
