WebsiteINTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL STUDIESThe International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague is part of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). It is a graduate institute of policy-oriented critical social science, founded in 1952 and able to draw on sixty years of experience. ISS is a highly diverse international community of scholars and students from the global south and the north, which brings together people, ideas and insights in a multi-disciplinary setting which nurtures, fosters and promotes critical thinking and conducts innovative research into fundamental social problems.
ISS' mission is to create and share state-of-the-art critical knowledge in relation to global issues in the areas of international development, social justice and equity. The strong partnerships with organizations and individuals in developing countries make up a network in which the co-creation of knowledge and an integrated approach to research and teaching can flourish and remain societally relevant. ISS research focuses on studying political, economic and social developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, North Africa, the Middle East and transition economies. The Institute explores new developments in North-South and South-South relationships and the role of the BRICS countries, especially in relation to globalization and development.
Over the past 60 years over 11,000 students from over 150 countries have studied at ISS. Most of them came from countries in Global South and returned to their countries of origin after graduation.

PhD in Development StudiesISS offers a four-year programme leading to the internationally recognized degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Development Studies. About 90 researchers are enrolled in the PhD programme, all in a different phase of their doctorate. Most of them are at work in their own office in the ISS building, refining their research proposal, or conducting a literature search, or they are in the final phase of writing their thesis. PhD researchers are embedded in one of ISS' four research programmes (Economics of Development & Emerging Markets; Governance, Globalization and Social Justice; Civic Innovation Research Initiative; and Political Economy of Resources, Environment and Population). Those in the second year of the programme are away doing fieldwork.
During the current call, only non-degree seeking mobility of 24 months can be offered (see how to apply), but this might be extended to a degree seeking mobility.
Alumni testimonial by PhD student Ricardo Sousa, Portugal My name is Ricardo Sousa, I am from Portugal. After some years of development work, both as practitioner and researcher, I decided to undertake a PhD to deepen my understanding of my field - conflict and peace processes. At the PhD programme in ISS-EUR I found a truly international experience with a multicultural environment spanning all continents. Such uniqueness interacts with the institute's inter-disciplinary approach to broaden and deepen the critical thinking over the social issues analyzed in the various seminars and activities of the programme.
Alumni testimonial by PhD Ariane Agnes Corradi ,Brazil "ISS has broadened my horizons in knowledge, theories, political stands, world views and approaches, music, food, values, gender roles, myths, words, alphabets, expectations, and dreams. It has made my world a lot smaller, and a lot bigger at the same time."
